Earth Paintings
During this Covid era my primary coping strategy has been local hiking. Fortunately, I am surrounded by some incredible natural areas. Until recently I took no photographs. save the occasional Selfless Selfie, for which I use an iPhone. My focus in the Shadow Selfless Selfies has always been the background patterns and textures, mostly natural (rocks, wood, lichen and water); my shadow was meant to enhance these qualities through light contrasts. The color palette in those images is often strikingly different from my DSLR photos. More earth tones, of course, but also less minimalist; sometimes quite the opposite. I decided to mine this vein more systematically--but with a DSLR--and eliminate any suggestion of the human form.. There is a flavor of Jackson Pollock's action (drip) paintings in a couple of these images, unintentional at first. In some cases I enhanced these qualities during post-processing. Other images retrospectively bring to my mind Anselm Kiefer and Jean Dubuffet.
